"Existing approaches to glasses-free 3-D require screens whose resolution requirements are so enormous that they are completely impractical," says MIT professor Wojciech Matusik, one of the co-authors on a related paper whose first author is Weizmann PhD Netalee Efrat. "This is the first technical approach that allows for glasses-free 3-D on a large scale."</div>

Glasses-free 3-D already exists, but not in a way that scales to <a class="textTag" href="http://phys.org/tags/movie+theaters/" rel="tag" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted rgb(49, 61, 87); color: #313d57; outline: none 0px; text-decoration: none;">movie theaters</a>. Traditional methods for TV sets use a series of slits in front of the screen (a "parallax barrier") that allows each eye to see a different set of pixels, creating a simulated sense of depth.</div>

But because parallax barriers have to be at a consistent distance from the viewer, this approach isn't practical for larger spaces like theaters that have viewers at different angles and distances.</div>

Other methods, including one from the MIT Media Lab, involve developing completely new physical projectors that cover the entire angular range of the audience. However, this often comes at a cost of lower image-resolution.</div>

The key insight with Cinema 3-D is that people in movie theaters move their heads only over a very small range of angles, limited by the width of their seat. Thus, it is enough to display images to a narrow range of angles and replicate that to all seats in the theater.</div>

What Cinema 3-D does, then, is encode multiple parallax barriers in one display, such that each viewer sees a parallax barrier tailored to their position. That range of views is then replicated across the theater by a series of mirrors and lenses within Cinema 3-D's special optics system.</div>

"With a 3-D TV, you have to account for people moving around to watch from different angles, which means that you have to divide up a limited number of pixels to be projected so that the viewer sees the image from wherever they are," says Gordon Wetzstein, an assistant professor of electrical engineering at Stanford University, who was not involved in the research. "The authors [of Cinema 3-D] cleverly exploited the fact that theaters have a unique set-up in which every person sits in a more or less fixed position the whole time."</div>

Cinema 3-D isn't particularly practical at the moment: The team's prototype requires 50 sets of mirrors and lenses, and yet is just barely larger than a pad of paper. But, in theory, the technology could work in any context in which 3-D visuals would be shown to multiple people at the same time, such as billboards or storefront advertisements. Matusik says that the team hopes to build a larger version of the display and to further refine the optics to continue to improve the image resolution.</div>

This mega-team is investigating possible human- and vehicle-driven causes of unintended vehicle acceleration. The research was prompted after a series of accidents occurring in Toyota vehicles from 2002 to 2010.</div>

"Unintended acceleration accidents are a complex problem with many potential causal factors," Ferris said. "Humans are not very good at problem-solving under this sort of cognitive state so we are trying to use the computational power of the vehicle to detect when drivers exhibit particular stress patterns. If the car knows that the human driver is under the influence of a particular stressor, it can provide support that is more appropriately tailored to the driver's cognitive state."</div>

A government investigation of the events was unable to definitively determine the extent of accidents that could have been attributed to vehicle malfunction or human error. As part of a lawsuit settlement, Toyota pledged $30 million to support independent research on ways to make vehicles safer.</div>

The 'super-group', as Ferris has termed the group of transportation research collaborators, has a goal of developing a system that can be installed in an advanced vehicle to detect when a driver's cognitive state turns problematic.</div>

"This could be a high workload or the driver involving themselves with a secondary task, such as texting and driving," Ferris said. "Imagine the number of lives that could be saved if automation was used to detect these distractions and do things to make the vehicle a safe place."</div>

The research is being conducted in a simulation facility at TTI, as well as a test track at Texas A&M's RELLIS campus. Participants spend time driving in a simulator in the lab, or in a real vehicle on a controlled course, while being monitored using biometric sensors. Researchers monitor heart rate, galvanic skin response, thermal imagery and the amount of sweat a person produces to determine different patterns in changing levels of stress. By using the simulator, researchers are able to explore additional driver conditions, as it allows safely simulated unintended vehicle acceleration or distracted driving.</div>

"What we are actually able to detect is a pattern in sympathetic autonomous nervous system arousal," Ferris said. "When a surprising, mentally challenging, or strongly emotional experience occurs, the driver is feeling their sympathetic nervous system preparing to fight or flight – to assess a potential threat and to focus cognitive efforts on that threat."</div>

This is helpful to the person if they are trying to flee an attacking tiger, but can impair the ability to maintain control of a complex system such as a modern vehicle. In addition to distractions, a driver's cognitive state could also be impacted by stress from an emotional response, being overworked or lack of sleep.</div>

After the system determines the driver is operating under a problematic state, the researchers test several techniques to help the driver recover, such as disengaging the transmission, or removing distractions to call attention back to the road. This can be achieved by a flashing light on the dashboard or by turning off the radio.</div>

This score is based on the number of downloads, amount of press coverage and social attention.</div>

Kathmandu, July 27: The government has decided to release Rs 750 million to immediately address the crisis in the wake of the floods, landslides and inundation caused in different parts of the country by the incessant rains.</div>

A meeting of the Central Disaster Relief Committee which convened today at the National Emergency Operations Centre decided to immediately release the amount to the affected districts for the rescue, relief and rehabilitation works.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The committee instructed the security bodies to work in coordination and with promptness for the rescue and relief of the affected people. It also directed the bodies concerned to work with priority at the affected places if there is the possible risk of the embankment at those places being washed away or damaged.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It is stated that the amount would be released from the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund to the Central Disaster Relief Committee to be mobilized in the related areas on a priority basis so that there is no paucity of funds for the rescue, relief and rehabilitation.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Bhim Bahadur Rawal, who is also looking after the Ministry of Home Affairs, said that the amount would be deposited in the Central Disaster Relief Committee so that there is no shortage of budget for relief, rescue and rehabilitation at the time of disaster.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“The people displaced from places where there is the problem of flooding and landslide should be provided shelter on public land, and if it is not possible arrangements should be made for tents to rehabilitate the affected people. Please, give priority to the disabled, underprivileged and the pregnant women in this connection,” DPM Rawal said.</div>

The meeting has urged the bodies concerned to make arrangements for the supply of potable water and the required foodstuff and medical treatment to prevent the spread of diarrhoea and epidemics in the worst-affected places.</div>

It likewise called on the bodies concerned to transport the essential commodities, food grains and medicines to the affected areas even by air in case there is no road accessibility, and to disseminate reliable, factual and objective information about the incidents to the people in coordination with the government and private media.</div>

Deputy Prime Minister Rawal instructed the security bodies to implement the disaster preparedness action plan.</div>
