<br /><br />The first urban bird monitoring 2016 has recorded a total of 13,749 individual birds from rural to urban gradients of Kathmandu Valley.<br /><br /><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CfIlMNx2g7E/WGidUF6s6GI/AAAAAAAABVY/MnjVA45wWZMtzVJ-r5fN6YdkHdB0q7uJQCLcB/s1600/nmbca.jpg"><img border="0" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CfIlMNx2g7E/WGidUF6s6GI/AAAAAAAABVY/MnjVA45wWZMtzVJ-r5fN6YdkHdB0q7uJQCLcB/s640/nmbca.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><br />Bird conservationists and researchers participated in the monitoring that was conducted by the Bird Conservation Nepal on January and June/July 2016.<br /><br />This number accounts for a total of 102 bird species. Of them, 85 species of birds with 6,496 individual birds were recorded in winter and 63 species of birds with 7,253 individual birds were recorded in summer.<br /><br />Researchers have said that the diversity of species had significantly decreased from rural to urban gradients.<br /><br />“We found very low species diversity in urban areas that might be due to a lack of habitat and reduced food availability,” Krishna Prasad Bhusal, one of the participants of the monitoring and Conservation Officer of BCN told The Himalayan Times.<br /><br />According to the monitoring report, the common pigeon was the most common bird species based on the number of individual birds recorded.<br /><br />A total of 4,545 common pigeons were recorded, 2,339 in winter and 2,206 in summer. Similarly, the house sparrow was identified as the second most common bird in urban and adjacent areas with 2,327 individual birds of this species.<br /><br />Likewise, 2,147 house crows were recorded, 827 common mynas, 765 cattle egrets, 426 Eurasian tree sparrows, 360 barn swallows, 308 jungle mynas, 243 red-vented bulbuls, and 159 black kites were recorded.<br /><br />According to the BCN study, urbanisation has affected the distribution of birds in Kathmandu Valley. However, long term monitoring and analysis of different environment variables are still necessary to analyse the effect of urbanization in birds in the Valley.<br /><br />Researchers recorded a higher number of resident bird species at 82 species, followed by winter migrant species at 16, and summer migrant species at 4.<br /><br />Urban habitats can be monitored using birds as an ecological indicator. Different habitat enrichment, like presence of exotic plants, high human density, road, industry, and buildings make urban habitats more complex. There is a strong need of conservation activities to protect the existing biodiversity in urban areas.<br /><br />Kathmandu is the most urbanised city in Nepal with a population of around four million people. More than 500 species of birds were recorded at Kathmandu Valley in 2008, while around 160 species are recorded only from the urban and its adjacent areas of Kathmandu Valley.<br /><br />“The increasing human density is narrowing the habitat of urban birds in the Valley. Modern housing practices, environmental pollution, high tension lines, lack of fruiting trees, and other factors are contributing to the decrease in bird population in the capital,” the monitoring report reads.<br /><br />The urban bird monitoring program divided Kathmandu into three gradients: urban, sub-urban, and rural based on core residential area to monitor the birds.<br />source: The Himalayan Times.

Healthful food perceptions influenced by price

In simple terms, lay theories are ideologies that people use to make sense of their social environment.<br /><br />One common lay theory is that healthful foods are more expensive than less healthful foods. The researchers point to one example of this popular theory - the nickname given to the health foods store Whole Foods, which is "Whole Paycheck."<br /><br />While there are certain types of health foods that are more expensive - such as organic and gluten-free products - Reczek notes that it does not always cost more to eat healthily.<br /><br /><b><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Costly food products perceived as more healthful in experiments</span></b><br />For their study, the researchers tested people's perceptions of the price of healthful foods in a series of experiments.<br /><br />In one experiment, the team provided participants with information on a "new" food product called granola bites. Some subjects were told the product was a health grade A- (a healthful food), while the remaining participants were told the product was a health grade C (less healthful).<br /><br />When each participant was asked how much they thought the granola bites cost, subjects who were told they were a health grade A- thought the bites were more expensive than subjects who were told they were a health grade C.<br /><br />This finding offers support to the popular belief that healthful foods are costlier. This relationship was further confirmed in another experiment, in which participants rated a breakfast cracker as more healthful when told that it was more expensive than a cheaper, identical cracker.<br /><br />For the next experiment, the team set out to investigate whether this lay theory influences people's behavior when it comes to choosing foods.<br /><br /><br />Participants were asked to imagine that a work colleague had asked them to order his or her lunch. Half of the subjects were told that their co-worker had requested a healthful lunch, while the remaining subjects had no instruction.<br /><br />Next, participants were offered two choices of food product on a computer screen: a chicken balsamic wrap and a roasted chicken wrap. Ingredients were listed for both products.<br /><br />The price was also shown for each product. However, the chicken balsamic wrap was listed as more expensive for some subjects, but for others, the roasted chicken wrap was costlier.<br /><br />The researchers found that participants who were instructed to choose a healthful product were significantly more likely to opt for the more expensive wrap, regardless of which wrap it was. This suggests that our food choices may be influenced by the lay belief that healthful products cost more.<br /><br />"People don't just believe that healthy means more expensive - they're making choices based on that belief," notes Reczek.<div> <br /><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Testing how price cues influence health perceptions</b></span><br />In the final two experiments, the team sought to gain a better understanding of how food prices influence peoples' perceptions of what is good for us.<br /><br />Firstly, the researchers asked participants to imagine that they were in a grocery store to purchase trail mix and told to choose from four differently priced products.<br /><br />One of the mixes was called the "Perfect Vision Mix." For some subjects, this mix was promoted as being "rich in vitamin A for eye health," while for others, the product was hailed as "rich in DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) for eye health."<br /><br />The team notes that both vitamin A and DHA are believed to be beneficial for eye health, but DHA is less familiar.<br /><br />For some participants, the Perfect Vision Mix was shown at an average price, while for others, it was more costly than the other three mixes.<br /><br />When asked about their perceptions of the "key" ingredient in the Perfect Vision Mix, participants thought that vitamin A was equally important for a healthful diet, regardless of how much the mix cost.<br /><b><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br />However, when DHA was promoted as the key ingredient, subjects were more likely to think that it was an important part of a healthful diet when it was shown as more expensive, compared with when it was an average price.</span></b><br />"People are familiar with vitamin A, so they feel they can judge its value without any price cues," explains Reczek. "But people don't know much about DHA, so they go back to the lay theory that expensive must be healthier."<br /><br />The team was further surprised during the experiment in which the subjects were told that DHA helped to prevent macular degeneration. When the DHA-containing mix was more expensive, participants were more likely to rate macular degeneration as a popular health issue, compared with when the product was an average price.</div> <div> <br /><b><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Findings are 'concerning'</span></b><br /><br />In the last experiment, participants were presented with a new product called the "Healthiest Protein Bar on the Planet."</div>

"Most people think that good-tasting food causes obesity," he explains.<br /><br />Tordoff was unconvinced, and he therefore designed a range of experiments to see whether the theory held any water. His findings were recently published in the journal Physiology & Behavior.<div> <br /><b><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Investigating flavor and weight gain</span></b><br />It has been established that if you feed a mouse cookies, chips, and cream, they will become obese. But is it the flavor of the foods that cause overeating? Or, could it be the nutrient density that promotes the gorging? After all, animals have evolved to seek out fatty and sugary foods as a matter of survival.<br /><br />Previous studies that have drawn conclusions about good taste (in this context, meaning flavor and texture) and its effect on weight gain have been flawed. For instance, many did not take into account the impact of variety on feeding behavior; having a spread of different foods to choose from can cause one to over-indulge. A buffet is a prime example of this.<br /><br />According to the authors of the recent research, only three studies to date have looked specifically at the influence of flavor on weight gain. None of these studies were conclusive, however. The reasons for this include sample size and, once again, the effects of variety.<br /><br />The first phase of Tordoff's study involved establishing whether mice would prefer food with added oily or sweet ingredients that were non-nutritive. The mice were served two pots of chow - one standard, and one with either a sucralose sweetener or mineral oil (both of which are calorie free).<br /><br />As expected, the mice preferred the mineral oil chow and sucralose chow. They virtually ignored the plainer fare. In fact, the mice thought so little of the standard chow that, according to the study authors, they "often defecated in the cup containing the plain diet."</div> </div>

They opened fire on those inside, killing five instantly before fleeing, according to a police report, which said two other victims died before reaching the hospital.<br /><br />Four of those killed were teenagers, two of them 15, one 16 and one 18. The killings come as the government of President Rodrigo Duterte prepares legislation to put to Congress to lower the age of criminal liability to nine from 15.<br /><br />More than 6,100 people have been killed in the past six months during Duterte’s controversial war on drugs, about a third in police operations and others classified as deaths under investigation. Police say killings during counter-narcotics operations were in self-defense.<br /><br />The crackdown, the core plank of Duterte’s election campaign, has been condemned internationally and has created tension between the Philippines and key allies and donors, among them the European Union, the United States and United Nations. He has praised China for staying out of it.<br /><br />Duterte has hit back with stunning rebukes and says he is willing to “rot in jail” to rid the Philippines of a drugs problem he initially vowed to solve within three to six months.<br /><br />He says the scourge was bigger than he first thought. In a television interview Thursday, Duterte said the drug war would not end soon.<br /><br />“Until the last pusher is out of the street ... until the last drugs lord is killed, this drug campaign would continue to the last day of my term,” he said.<br /><br />Killings by vigilantes have occurred often, and the authorities have been accused by rights groups of hiring assassins to kill suspects.<br /><br />Duterte vehemently denies police are in cahoots with vigilantes and has said drug gangs are killing rivals and silencing informants and it was happening long before he took office.</span>

Reports suggested the A40 was bathed in thick fog this morning.<br /><br />Six vehicles were said to be badly damaged, while a further 10 to 15 were also involved, with the most serious injuries happening in the middle of the pile-up.<br /><br />It was really dangerous, says pregnant mother<br /><br />Pregnant mother-of-two Ami Gaston, from Carterton, was in the car with her partner when she saw the first vehicle crash. She said the accident happened about half a mile from the Witney exit, blocking the right lane.<br /><br />"A man on his own had skidded and crashed into middle barrier. My partner was driving - we had to swerve out of the right lane to avoid hitting him. His door was open and air bags were released," Miss Gaston said.<br /><br />"IPHONED an ambulance but couldn't stop. My partner wouldn't stop because I am 20 weeks pregnant and didn't want to put us in danger."<br /><br />She added that the heavy fog meant the situation was "really dangerous", as it was difficult to see any other car until you were "on top of it".<br /><br />It was carnage, eyewitness says <br /><br />Another eyewitness arrived at the scene later and described the "carnage" as multiple cars swerved and crashed on the busy road.<br /><br />The woman, who asked not to be named, said she "luckily" saw hazard warning LIGHTS ahead as she approached on the slip road from Carterton, and moved on to a grass verge before witnessing the pile-up.<br /><br />"I saw cars going zooming past me and trying to swerve out the way of the stationary cars but crashing into them," she said.<br /><br />"I saw one car try swerve in between a Mini and another car, ending up crashing into the Mini and (flying) up in the air.<br /><br />"I saw two cars swerve as they braked so hard and go flying into the barrier in the middle of the road ... it was carnage," she added.<br /><br />The incident is likely to cause major disruption for many people travelling across the country following the Christmas break, as the road connects London to Wales.<br />
