'Partition is not over': Pakistani Hindus

For decades, Jogdas dreamed of moving to India to escape the persecution he suffered as a Hindu in Muslim Pakistan. But the reality of life over the border is a far cry from those dreams.<br />
Seventy years after partition unleashed the largest mass migration in human history, Hindus are still moving from Pakistan to India, where tens of thousands languish in makeshift camps near the border with no legal right to work.<br />

Many have no choice but to toil illegally in the stone quarries near where they live because their movements are strictly controlled by the authorities, suspicious of anyone from across the border.<br />
It is not the welcome most of them expected in Hindu-majority India.<br />
"No job, no house, no money, no food. There, we were working in the fields, we were farmers. But here people like us are forced to break rocks to earn a living," said 81-year-old Jogdas, who goes by just one name.<br />
"For us the partition is still not over. Hindus are still trying to come back to their country. And when they come here, they have nothing," he told AFP from the camp on the outskirts of Jodhpur where he lives.<br />
More than 15 million people were uprooted following India's independence from Britain in 1947, which triggered months of violence in which at least a million people were killed for their faith.<br />
Amid the bloody chaos, Hindus and Sikhs fled the newly formed Pakistan, as Muslims moved in the opposite direction.<br />
Despite the exodus, Hindus remain one of Pakistan's largest religious minorities. Estimates vary, but they are believed to account for around 1.6 percent of the population of roughly 200 million.<br />
Many say they face discrimination and even risk abduction, rape and forced marriage.<br />
"Soon after partition, the harassment started," said Jogdas, whose family had only moved to what is now Pakistan a few months before partition to escape a devastating drought.<br />
"There was not even a single day when we could live in peace. I wanted to come back to live with my Hindu brothers."<br />
Most of the migrants to India come from Pakistan's Sindh province, taking a four-hour train journey through the Thar desert to Jodhpur in the arid western state of Rajasthan.<br />
That they share the culture, food and language of Rajasthan should make it easy for them to assimilate in their adopted homeland.<br />
In reality, they live in isolated camps, far from local communities and are treated with suspicion by authorities.<br />
PM Narendra Modi's government has said it wants to make it easier for persecuted adherents of the faith to find refuge in India.<br />
Last year it changed the rules to allow immigrants to apply for citizenship in the state where they live, rather than having to go through the central government.<br />
Hindus from Pakistan qualify for a fast track to citizenship after seven years in the country.<br />
But bureaucratic delays have meant the process of getting it can take longer to complete.<br />
Khanaramji, 64, became an Indian citizen in 2005 after fleeing Pakistan in 1997.<br />
He said many others had given up and returned to Pakistan, disillusioned by life in India.<br />
"There is no assistance from the government. We are just like cattle with no owners. We are just surviving on our own," he said.<br />
Worse even than the poverty is the suspicion from authorities.<br />
"Those who do not have citizenship are harassed by (intelligence) agencies. They are always treated like suspects and agents of Pakistan," said Khanaramji, who goes by only one name.<br />
"They spend most of what they earn on going to police stations and agency offices."<br />
Hindu Singh Sodha, who runs a charity in Jodhpur for Pakistani Hindus seeking to settle in India, said they had high hopes of Modi when he came to office in 2014, but had been disappointed.<br />
The migrants still come under increased scrutiny whenever tensions flare between India and Pakistan — a frequent occurrence under the Modi government.<br />
"Their life becomes hell," he said.<br />
"Because everything is affected. Their shelter, healthcare, access to education, their livelihood."<br />
<br />
But some feel even that is worth tolerating.<br />
Horoji fled to India with his two adult sons two years ago after receiving death threats from the family's Muslim neighbours in Pakistan.<br />
<br />
"To save our lives, we had to run to India," said 65-year-old Horoji, whose grandparents were originally from present-day India but found themselves on the wrong side of the border at partition.<br />
"My grandfather had gone to the other side for work. But he had told us to move to India when the right time comes as he had sensed times would not be safe for Hindus in future."

The study shows that caffeine acts as respiratory stimulant that may improve short-term breathing rates in infants. In the study a regulated portion of caffeine, helped them perform slightly better in tests that measure their ability to breathe out later in life. The findings also found that the infants were also significantly better at exhaling during a forced breath.<br />

In the study Melbourne Royal Women's Hospital doctors examined the development of over 140 premature babies (under ten days), half of whom were given a dose of caffeine once a day, over 11 years, and half of them were given a placebo. The trial participants were checked at 18 months and five years, with the group that received caffeine found to have a better breathing ability at the age of 11, than the other group. The caffeine was given to the infants with milk through a tube or as an injection, once daily.<br />

Lead author of the study, Dr Lex Doyle explained that caffeine belongs to a group of drugs known as methylxanthines. This group of drugs has the ability to reduce apnea of prematurity, a condition in which the baby stops breathing for many seconds.<br />

(Health News) -- Testosterone treatment can boost bone density and reduce anemia in older men with low levels of the hormone, but it might also open the door to future heart risks, a new set of trials suggests.<br />
<br />
The findings come in the last four studies to be reported out of the Testosterone Trials, a set of seven overlapping federally funded year-long clinical trials conducted at 12 sites across the United States.<br />
<br />
All told, the Testosterone Trials seem to indicate that the best use of testosterone therapy is for treatment of decreased sexual function in men with so-called "low T" (low testosterone levels), said Dr. Thomas Gill. He is a Yale University professor of geriatrics who ran one of the clinical trial sites.<br />
<br />
But the trials also found that men receiving testosterone treatment experienced a significantly greater increase in arterial plaque than men not taking the hormone, Gill noted. That could raise their future risk of heart attack, stroke and heart disease.<br />
<br />
"Even if it were used for sexual function, for which the evidence is strongest, I think you'd have to consider the potential for some adverse long-term consequences on cardiovascular disease," Gill said.<br />
<br />
The use of testosterone-replacement therapy has nearly doubled in recent years, from 1.3 million patients in 2009 to 2.3 million in 2013, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.<br />
<br />
This boom prompted an Institute of Medicine panel to urge new clinical trials investigating the usefulness and potential harm of testosterone treatment. In response, the U.S. National Institute on Aging (NIA) funded the Testosterone Trials.<br />
<br />
The Testosterone Trials involved 790 men aged 65 and older with low levels of testosterone caused by aging, as well as symptoms that could be related to low T such as sexual problems, fatigue, muscle weakness, or impaired memory and thinking.<br />
<br />
The first three sets of clinical trial findings came out a year ago, and focused on the three most-touted potential benefits of testosterone therapy: improvement of sexual ability; vitality; and physical function.<br />
<br />
Those first reports revealed that testosterone could improve a man's sexual desire and function, but wouldn't do much to improve their overall vitality or physical function.<br />
<br />
The last four Testosterone Trials were published Feb. 21 in the Journal of the American Medical Association:<br />
<br />
Anemia trial. About 54 percent of men with unexplained anemia and 52 percent with anemia from known causes had clinically significant increases in their red blood cell levels after a year of testosterone therapy, compared with 15 percent and 12 percent, respectively, of those in a placebo group.<br />
Bone trial. After one year, participants experienced significantly increased bone mineral density and estimated bone strength. The results were greater in the spine than the hip.<br />
Cardiovascular trial. The study found that the volume of arterial plaque increased significantly more in the testosterone-treated group compared to the untreated "control" group.<br />
Cognition trial. After a year of treatment, there was no significant change in verbal memory, visual memory or problem-solving.<br />
JAMA Internal Medicine also published a study conducted outside the Testosterone Trials, which showed a short-term reduction in heart attacks and strokes among men receiving testosterone.<br />

<br />
That study showed a 33 percent reduced risk of heart problems with an average follow-up of about three years, compared with non-testosterone users. However, it was not a clinical trial; researchers used the medical records of more than 8,800 men in California to draw their conclusions.<br />
<br />
Even though the trials showed positive benefit for bone health and anemia, Gill said it's not likely testosterone will be considered a first-line treatment for those conditions.<br />
<br />
That's because there already are other well-established and more effective treatments that focus on more specific sources of bone disease and anemia than low testosterone, Gill said.<br />
<br />
"Those are potentially areas of extra benefit if a man were to be prescribed testosterone for sexual function," Gill said. "It's unlikely testosterone would be prescribed either for bone or for anemia."<br />
<br />
But, Dr. Bradley Anawalt said, taken together, all the Testosterone Trial findings show that testosterone could be a reasonable treatment for older men suffering more than one condition related to low T. Anawalt is a professor of endocrinology at the University of Washington in Seattle and a member of The Endocrine Society's leadership council.<br />
<br />
"If somebody walks into your office and their sex drive is a little low, their sense of vitality has dropped, and they have low bone mineral density, you might consider prescribing an antidepressant, Viagra and a bone therapy drug," Anawalt said. "Maybe testosterone could be a reasonable substitute for all three."<br />
<br />
However, the new findings cast a shadow on the long-term effects of testosterone on heart health, Anawalt said. This would lead him to carefully weigh whether to prescribe the hormone to a man with low-but-normal testosterone levels and no outward symptoms related to low T.<br />
<br />
"I would say, 'We have uncertainty about the health effects of testosterone and your risk of heart attacks. I can't in good conscience prescribe this testosterone to you. I think it's a bad idea,'" he explained.<br />
<br />
"But if you're clearly low and you clearly have a disease caused by testosterone deficiency, I'd use the same data to say there's nothing out there that says this is unsafe," Anawalt continued.<br />
<br />
<br />
American Heart Association President Stephen Houser said that while the accompanying study that detected decreased heart risk among testosterone users is "tantalizing," the findings related to arterial plaque raise strong concerns about future risk of stroke and heart attack.<br />
<br />
"If you have a heart attack, it's hard to come back from that. If you have a stroke, it's hard to come back from that," said Houser, senior associate dean of research at Temple University in Philadelphia. "I want to be young again, too, but I don't think there's enough evidence out there that I would consider taking testosterone."<br />
<br />
Gill pointed out that there are also continuing concerns that testosterone therapy could increase a man's risk of prostate cancer, much as estrogen therapy can increase the risk of breast cancer in women. However, the Testosterone Trials were too short-term to assess this risk.<br />
<br />
Dr. Sergei Romashkan is chief of the clinical trials branch in the NIA's division of geriatrics and clinical gerontology. The trials mark the beginning, rather than the end, of research into testosterone therapy, he said.<br />
<br />
Romashkan noted that the FDA is working with the pharmaceutical industry to conduct additional large-scale clinical trials looking at the heart health effects of testosterone. Testosterone therapy currently carries a boxed warning of potential heart risks, mandated by the FDA.<br />
<br />
<br />
"In no case was this a definitive study," Romashkan said. "We have learned a lot more than we knew before this study started, but still not all questions are answered."

LSD May Help Reveal What Makes Music Meaningful

There's a good chance that there's a song that is particularly meaningful to you, and a new small study from Switzerland may explain what makes things we experience, including music, meaningful.<br />
<br />
In the study, researchers asked people to take the drug lysergic acid diethylamide, or LSD, and then were able to pinpoint how people's brains ascribed meaning to specific factors, such as songs, in their environment.<br />
<br />
It turns out that this connection to meaning may involve certain areas of the brain that previous research has tied to how people experience their sense of self, the researchers said.<br />
<br />
The new findings show which cells, chemicals and regions in the brain "are involved when we perceive our environment as meaningful and relevant," study co-author Katrin Preller, a psychology and neuroscience researcher at the Zürich University Hospital for Psychiatry in Switzerland, said in a statement. "This is important to understand, since it can reveal potential targets for the treatment of psychiatric illnesses," Preller told Live Science.<br />
<br />
Previous research has shown that taking LSD alters how a person ascribes meaning to his or her environment, Preller said. But it wasn't clear what chemicals or parts of the brain were involved in these changes, she said.<br />
<br />
In the new study, the researchers performed a series of three brain scans on 22 people. For each scan, the participants were given a placebo, LSD or LSD plus a drug called ketanserin, which blocks some of LSD's effects on the brain. During the brain scans, the people in the study listened to some songs that had a special meaning to them, and others that were not particularly meaningful to them.<br />
<br />
The researchers found that songs that were normally meaningless to the listeners became meaningful when the people listened to them under the influence of LSD. However, that effect was diminished when the people had taken LSD along with ketanserin, according to the study, published Jan. 26 in the journal Current Biology.<br />
<br />
The brain scans showed that this change — from meaningless to meaningful — appeared to be induced by LSD acting on certain receptors and structures in the brain, according to the study. These receptors and structures have previously been linked to how people experience a sense of self, the researchers said.<br />

These receptors may be potential targets for the treatment of people who have psychiatric disorders that alter the way they attribute meaning to their environment, Preller said. One example of such a disorder is psychosis, which involves losing touch with reality.<br />
<br />
In addition to unveiling potential drug treatments, the new findings suggest that hallucinogenic drugs may have therapeutic potential on their own, Adam Halberstadt, an assistant adjunct professor of psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego who was not involved in the study, wrote in a unpublished editorial.<br />
<br />
For example, two studies published in 2016 showed that a single dose of the hallucinogen psilocybin, which is found in "magic" mushrooms, might help to reduce anxiety and depression in people with cancer, Halberstadt wrote in the editorial.<br />
<br />
Both psilocybin and LSD are known to provoke mystical experiences, Halberstadt wrote.<br />
<br />
"The ability of hallucinogens to increase perceived meaningfulness and personal relevance could be one factor contributing to mystical experiences as well as to the beneficial therapeutic outcome," he wrote. "Patients who believe that death has profundity and meaning are more likely to peacefully accept the prospect of their impending death."

Tens of thousands of people rallied in U.S. cities and at airports on Sunday to voice outrage over President Donald Trump's executive order restricting entry into the country for travelers from seven Muslim-majority nations.<br />
<br />
In New York, Washington and Boston, a second wave of demonstrations followed spontaneous rallies that broke out at U.S. airports on Saturday as U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents began enforcing Trump's directive. The protests spread westward as the day progressed.<br />
<br />
The order, which bars admission of Syrian refugees and suspends travel to the United States from Syria, Iraq, Iran and four other countries on national security grounds, has led to the detention or deportation of hundreds of people arriving at U.S. airports.<br />
<br />
One of the largest of Sunday's protests took place at Battery Park in lower Manhattan, within sight of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor, long a symbol of welcome to U.S. shores.<br />
<br />
Democratic Senator Charles Schumer of New York told the crowd that Trump's order was un-American and ran counter to the country's core values.<br />
<br />
"What we are talking about here is life and death for so many people," the Senate Democratic leader said. "I will not rest until these horrible orders are repealed."<br />
<br />
The march, estimated to have grown to about 10,000 people, later began heading to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection office in lower Manhattan.<br />
<br />
In Washington, thousands rallied at Lafayette Square across from the White House, chanting: "No hate, no fear, refugees are welcome here."<br />
<br />
It was the second straight weekend that Washington was the scene of protests. Last Saturday, hundreds of thousands of women participated in an anti-Trump rally and march, one of dozens staged across the country.<br />
<br />
On Sunday, many of the protesters left the White House area and marched along Pennsylvania Avenue, stopping at the Trump International Hotel where they shouted: "Shame, shame, shame."<br />
<br />
A crowd that police estimated at 8,000 people eventually arrived at the steps of the U.S. Capitol, where a line of uniformed officers stood guard.<br />
<br />
As the crowd passed the Canadian Embassy en route to the Capitol, protesters chanted: "Hey hey, ho ho, I wish our leader was Trudeau." It was a reference to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Saturday Twitter message affirming his country's welcoming policy toward refugees.<br />
<br />
Trump defended the executive order in a statement on Sunday, saying the United States would resume issuing visas to all countries once secure policies were put in place over the next 90 days.<br />
<br />
"To be clear, this is not a Muslim ban, as the media is falsely reporting," Trump said. "This is not about religion - this is about terror and keeping our country safe."<br />
<br />
'NEVER AGAIN MEANS NEVER'<br />

Aria Grabowski, 30, of Washington, was carrying a sign that read: “Never again means never again for everyone.”<br />
<br />
Above the slogan was a photograph of Jewish refugees who fled Germany in 1939 on a ship that was turned away from Havana, Cuba, and forced to return to Europe. More than 250 people aboard the ship were eventually killed by the Nazis.<br />
<br />
About 200 protesters chanted on Sunday afternoon at Washington Dulles International Airport in northern Virginia near the U.S. capital.<br />
<br />
About the same number gathered at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, where anxious families awaited relatives detained for hours after flights from countries affected by the presidential order.<br />
<br />
At Los Angeles International Airport, hundreds of people had gathered to protest Trump's order, as chants of "refugees are welcome here" echoed through the arrivals hall.<br />
<br />
Organizers estimated that more than 10,000 people packed Boston's Copley Square to hear Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, a vocal critic of Trump and a leader of the Democratic Party's liberal wing, and other speakers.<br />
<br />
During the protests, dozens of Muslims, some of them kneeling on protest signs, bowed in prayer on rugs laid out on a grassy patch of ground in the square.<br />
<br />
In Houston, which was already filling up with visitors for next Sunday's Super Bowl, about 500 people marched through the downtown.<br />
<br />
Jennifer Fagen, 47, a sociology professor at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, said she hoped she did not lose her job for protesting.<br />
<br />
"I'm Jewish, and it's supposed to be 'never again,'" Fagen said, referring to the Holocaust. "Jews should be the first ones to defend Muslims, considering what has happened to us, and it seems it's being repeated under Trump."<br />
<br />
At Detroit Metropolitan Airport, police cordoned off sections of terminal as up to 3,000 demonstrators chanted, "No hate, no fear, refugees are welcome here."<br />
<br />
Among the demonstrators were Wail Aljirafi and his wife, Samyeh Zindani of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and their three children.<br />
<br />
"We want them to feel that they're always included," Zindani, a Yemeni-American, told Reuters.<br />
<br />
In the Detroit suburb of Hamtramck, Michigan, home to a large number of Yemeni immigrant families and the nation's first Muslim-majority city council, at least 600 people rallied outside City Hall.<br />
<br />
Rama Alhoussaini, 23, a Syrian immigrant who lives in nearby Dearborn, said she and her family emigrated to Michigan in 1999 when she was 6 years old.<br />

"Now for us to see this kind of hatred and bigotry, it breaks my heart," she said. "It makes me feel like I am not wanted here."<br />

CPN-UML leaders have alleged that the ruling parties—Nepali Congress and CPN (Maoist Centre)—are reluctant to hold the elections fearing their defeat.<br />

Addressing the provincial gathering organised by CPN-UML central publicity department and Press Chautari in Birendranagar on Sunday, UML Vice Chairman Yubaraj Gyawali said that the ruling parties are running away from the elections because of the growing popularity of CPN-UML. “Maoist Chairman and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal and NC leader Sher Bahadur Deuba are panic-stricken because of UML’s popularity.” <br />

“The CPN-UML is political doctor. No parties other than UML seem to have the guts to resolve the country’s problem. That’s why the people’s trust is growing for UML,” he claimed.<br />

UML Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai, who is also the chief of party publicity department, charged that PM Dahal and Deuba of acting in tyrannical manner. He claimed the government was not serious towards averting the political and constitutional crisis the nation would face after Jan 21, 2018. “The CPN-UML is capable to provide way-out to the nation if the NC and CPN (Maoist Centre) can’t do it,” he claimed.<br />

Saying that nowhere in the world can a nationality be found in the name of every ethnic group and language, secretary Bhattarai said the CPN (Maoist Centre) is trying to put the national independence and sovereignty at peril. “The Madhes-based parties are currently emulating the past actions of Maoists,” he said.<br />
<br />
He noted that there are nearly 2000 ethnic groups in India but not as many states. He further claimed that Tarai and hill should not be separated in the name of federalism.<br />
<br />
 “Let no one dream to separate Madhes and hill as long as there is one single cadre of CPN-UML in the parliament and on the street,” he said. He further warned that the plans to make Hindi as official language were motivated by the intention to replace the national language. <br />

A federal judge blocked the deportation on Saturday of dozens of travelers and refugees from seven Muslim-majority nations, stranded at U.S. airports under an order from President Donald Trump, after a lawsuit filed on behalf of two Iraqis with ties to U.S. security forces.<br />
<br />
In the lawsuit filed in federal court in Brooklyn, New York, the two men challenged Trump's directive on constitutional grounds. The suit said their connections to U.S. forces made them targets in their home country and that the pair had valid visas to enter the United States.<br />
<br />
The lawsuit highlights some of the legal obstacles facing Trump's new administration as it tries to carry out the directive, which the president signed late on Friday to impose a four-month ban on refugees entering the United States and a 90-day hold on travelers from Syria, Iran and five other Muslim-majority countries.<br />
<br />
In an emergency ruling on Saturday, U.S. District Judge Ann Donnelly ordered U.S. authorities to refrain from deporting previously approved refugees as well as "approved holders of valid immigrant and non-immigrant visas and other individuals ... legally authorized to enter the United States" from the countries targeted in Trump's order.<br />
<br />
The American Civil Liberties Union, which sought the temporary stay, said it would help about 100 to 200 people who found themselves detained in transit or at U.S. airports after Trump signed the order.<br />
<br />
"I am directing the government to stop removal if there is someone right now in danger of being removed," Donnelly said in the court hearing. "No one is to be removed in this class."<br />
<br />
U.S. Department of Justice attorney Susan Riley during the hearing said, "This has unfolded with such speed that we haven't had an opportunity to address all the legal issues."<br />
<br />
Many of the people in a huge crowd that had gathered outside the Brooklyn courthouse broke out into cheers after word of the judge's ruling filtered out.<br />
<br />
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security in a statement hours later said only a small fraction of airline passengers arriving in the United States on Saturday were "inconvenienced while enhanced security measures were implemented."<br />
<br />
"These individuals went through enhanced security screenings and are being processed for entry to the United States, consistent with our immigration laws and judicial orders," the statement said.<br />
<br />
The department said Trump's executive order remained in place and that its officers would enforce it.<br />
Separately, a group of state attorneys general were discussing whether to file their own court challenge against Trump's order, officials in three states told Reuters.<br />
<br />
"TARGETED BY TERRORISTS"<br />
<br />
The plight of one of the men who brought the lawsuit, a former U.S. Army interpreter who was detained at John F. Kennedy International Airport, is especially compelling, said David Leopold, a former president of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, who is not involved in the suit.<br />
<br />
"Here is a guy who was a translator who worked for the U.S. military for years, who himself was targeted by terrorists," he said. "It is clear that if he is sent back, he is facing a direct threat to his life."<br />
<br />
That man, Hameed Khalid Darweesh, was released later on Saturday and told a crowd of reporters at JFK Airport that he did not have ill feelings about his detention.<br />
<br />
"America is the greatest nation, the greatest people in the world," he said.<br />
<br />
Darweesh, 53, worked for the U.S. Army and for a U.S. contractor in Iraq from 2003 to 2013 as an interpreter and engineer, the lawsuit said.<br />
<br />
The second plaintiff, Haider Sameer Abdulkhaleq Alshawi, 33, was also detained at JFK Airport but has since been released. He is the husband of an Iraqi woman who worked for a U.S. contractor in Iraq. She already lives in Houston, the suit said.<br />
<br />
Trump, a Republican, has said his order would help protect Americans from terrorist attacks.<br />
<br />
The lawsuit on behalf of the Iraqis challenges Trump's order on several grounds. It says the order violates the U.S. Constitution's guarantee of due process by taking away their ability to apply for asylum, and violates the guarantee of equal protection by discriminating against them on the basis of their country of origin without sufficient justification.<br />
<br />
It also says the order violates procedural requirements of federal rulemaking.<br />
<br />
The next hearing in the case was set for Feb. 10.<br />
<br />
Supporters of the order say the president has wide authority to limit the entry of foreign nationals from specific countries when it is in the national interest.<br />
<br />
"Even if they do and they win, my answer is so what?" said Mark Krikorian, the director of the conservative Center for Immigration Studies.<br />
<br />
"We are talking a few dozen people – that is just a last-ditch effort to get the last few people in. It doesn’t really change the policy," he said.<br />
<br />
Trump's order does not mention specific religions but Trump said in an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network on Friday he was acting to help Christians in Syria who were "horribly treated."<br />
<br />
Comments like that could come back to haunt the president in litigation over his order, said Hiroshi Motomura, an immigration expert at UCLA School of Law.<br />
<br />
"There were comments during the campaign that focused very much on religion as the target," Motomura said. "If the record showed that the origins of a particular measure were based on targeting a particular group, that could be challenged in court."<br />

David Beckham has revealed young players were forced to perform “a funny dance” in front of senior professionals at Manchester United as a punishment for stepping out of line.<br />

The former England captain was asked about the current child sex abuse scandal in football during his appearance on BBC Radio Four’s Desert Island Discs.<br />
<br />
“There was never anything at Manchester United and it is disgraceful what has gone on and there has to be something done about it,” he told presenter Kirsty Young.<br />
<br />
“The closest part would have been certain professionals that if we had gone out of line they would have made us do a funny dance in the middle of the changing room in front of the professionals, in front of our heroes at the time.”<br />
Beckham said it was humiliating, adding: “That was all it was, but that was just to teach us a lesson – there was never any wrong-doing.”<br />
<br />
The 41-year-old signed for the Premier League club aged 16 and was part of the Class of ’92 which included Ryan Giggs, Gary and Phil Neville, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes.<br />

In a wide-ranging interview on the 75th anniversary edition of Desert Island Discs, which is being broadcast on Sunday at 11.15am, Beckham did not pick a single record from his wife Victoria’s Spice Girls discography.<br />

Beckham, who is an ambassador for Unicef, said he keeps all his England caps at his house and his “precious” medals in a safe in a bank.<br />

“I have so many pairs of boots, over a thousand pairs of boots. I keep them in storage. They are in boxes.”<br />
Asked by Young if it competes with Victoria’s shoe collection he replied: “It does actually.”<br />
<br />
Beckham said his mother and father had made many sacrifices over the years in order to achieve his dream of being a footballer. However getting praise from his father was rare.<br />
<br />
“I knew that my dad would always be proud of my achievements. The only time my dad turned round to me and said ‘you know what son, you have done really well’ was when I got my 100th cap for England.<br />
<br />
“It makes me emotional. Everybody wants to make their parents proud.”<br />
Beckham admitted it was difficult when he started dating the then Victoria Adams, given their celebrity status. He said her manager Simon Fuller wanted to keep the relationship quiet so the footballer used to drive to see his new girlfriend in his “amazing bright blue” BMW.<br />

“We used to sit in a Harvester car park and we just used to kiss, of course, and spend time together,” he said.<br />
The father-of-four stressed how important his family was to him and they have worked together “as a unit” through difficult periods and “mistakes over the years”.<br />

“Do we stay together because it’s a brand? Of course not, we stay together because we love each other. We stay together because we have four amazing children.”<br />
Beckham revealed he was “shocked and devastated” when he found out United were selling him to Real Madrid in 2003.<br />

“I honestly did not watch Manchester United play for three years,” he said.

Almost out of words at how bad Liverpool are<br />
I don’t think there are enough words in the English vocabulary to describe just how utterly awful Liverpool have been for this entire month. A loss to the 18th-placed championship team with their fourth-choice goalkeeper, I’m not even surprised anymore.<br />

From second place with a chance at a title and two cups, to limping out in pathetic fashion from two competitions and now being in real danger of dropping to 6th place.<br />
<br />
It feels like an eternity now when Liverpool looked like they were going to score on every attack. Now it feels like I’ve been watching the same game on repeat, sideways passing and then losing the ball and getting cut to ribbons on every counter attack. The players are listless, passionless, and just jaded, it reminds me of the Hodgson era or the lowest ebbs during Rodgers’ time.<br />

I love Klopp, I adore the man, I still think he’s brilliant. The kneejerk reactions from pundits and fans, who are very much enjoying this Liverpool meltdown, now say he’s a fraud and has been found out. I don’t think that’s the case, I just think the team is knackered, low in confidence, and with the barrage of fixutres, he has simply not figured out a way to stop the rot. But the buck has to stop with him.<br />

Why are there no backup wingers when the formation relies on pace? Why is TAA the backup RB? Why is Lucas still in the ****ing team? Why does every corner fail to beat the first man? And why is the team still so jittery on defense?<br />
<br />
A win is needed against Chelsea, nothing less. Do that, and perhaps some confidence will return and the team can hold on to a top 4 spot. Lose, and I fully expect the Liverpool train to continue its complete derailment.<br />

I love Klopp, and I don’t think the club can do better, but he needs to right this ship. There are no more cup fixtures, no more distractions, league or bust, otherwise serious questions need to be start being asked of everyone at the club.<br />

Exiting the two cups this week could work out in our favour. With just the league to concentrate on, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs to visit Anfield, it is set up for a cracking final four months.<br />

If you look at the our last eight games vs Chelsea’s last eight, the title race is far from over. If we beat Chelsea on Tuesday, everyone will be talking up our chances again, and I’m certain they will come to Anfield looking to avoid defeat.<br />

The weirdness of selling Snodgrass<br />
I’m really struggling to come to terms with the decision by Hull to sell Robert Snodgrass. His attacking contributions are well documented and Hull’s playing style is improving under Marco Silva’s tutelage to the point that escaping relegation seems more likely today than it has for a month. Why then, have Hull sold their main attacking outlet, as opposed to using him?<br />

The only rationale is the price. I don’t think you’ll get 10 million for a paceless winger at any time other than right now. This also makes sense when coupled with Jake Livermore’s transfer: never before and never again will you see Jake Livermore demand a price of 10 million. These two would also be amongst Hull’s higher earners and so freeing up space on the wage bill and 20 million isn’t a bad return (for Hull) for two players who, at their peak, won’t be more than mid-table players.<br />

Whatever the reason, this is definitely the most balls-out, ‘go big or go home’ approach Marco Silva could’ve taken. As a neutral to the relegation fight, I hope it works. And if it doesn’t, I hope he is persevered with in the Champo because he looks like a man with a plan and he knows the way he wants that plan executed.<br />

Some simple rules changes<br />
There’s been some interesting debate on rules changes since Marco Van Basten (ex-striker) suggested getting rid of offside, amongst other things (who’d have thought !!).<br />
<br />
Despite some interesting technology becoming available, surely we hit the low hanging fruit first – implementing some (pretty minor) changes that have been massively successful in other sports.<br />
<br />
Firstly, timekeeping. There’s a world of difference between “approx. 1 min of injury time”….and “there are 26 seconds left and you’re 1-0 down”. Pretty much every other sport has this – basically a link from the ref’s watch to a stadium clock. It’s not rocket science, it adds to the excitement (I’ve never understood the appeal of Fergie time) and if you stop the clock for major injuries and substitutions, you also remove a couple of major sources of time-wasting and irritation to fans.<br />
<br />
Secondly, 10 min sin-bin (orange card). Firstly, two yellows would get 10 mins off the field, but also, surely any current red card bar deliberate violent conduct (trying deliberately to hurt someone) could just be an orange. Every week, some idiot accidentally goes over the top with a miss timed tackle, and gets sent off thus ruining the contest – just give him 10 mins to have a good think about his behaviour. Also with a lesser penalty, more sh#thousery can be punished with a more appropriate offence – dive…10 mins, clear time wasting…10 mins, screaming at the ref…10 mins.<br />
<br />
Lastly, and straight out of field hockey and rugby’s book, for a foul, the ball doesn’t have to be stopped or even kicked to anyone else…you can just dribble away with it (as long as you pass through the place where the offence happened) – no messing around. And if a defender deliberately tries to stop the quick free kick happening…10 mins for you, sir…The impact on both hockey and rugby have been massive, speeding up the games and making them much more exciting.<br />
