More than 20 months after the Gorkha Earthquake, the National Reconstruction Authority on Sunday started distributing the first tranche of the private housing reconstruction grant to the quake-affected families in Bhaktapur district.

Each displaced household will receive Rs50,000 in the first instalment. They will get an additional Rs250,000 in the next two phases.

A total of 26,016 households have been enlisted as beneficiaries, according to the Bhaktapur District Administration Office. The Bhaktapur DAO said the first tranche would be deposited in the bank accounts of around 18,000 beneficiaries this week. The homeless families have already opened their accounts in the designated banks.

“We were planning to distribute the first tranche to all the beneficiaries. But the government has not allocated enough funds. The grants will be distributed to 18,000 households in the next few days. The remaining 8,000 families will get the money when we get more budget,” Bhaktapur CDO Drona Pokharel told the Post.

The government has released Rs900 million to the DAO so far. An additional Rs410 million will be required to pay the first instalment of cash to the remaining families.

Bhaktapur is the last of the 14 worst-affected districts where the aid was distributed. The NRA has already distributed the money to most of the households in 11 worst-hit districts, while grants are being distributed in Kathmandu and Lalitpur.
