Don’t crack the bottles of bubbly just yet, energy execs. Environmental groups might want to park their pitchforks for the moment, too. The new Republican Congress and incoming Trump Administration might have some surprises up their sleeves for both sides.</div>

While the oil and natural gas industry’s lobbyists are clearly banking on friendlier partners for “smarter and forward-looking energy policies,” in the words of American Petroleum Institute chief Jack Gerard Wednesday, the sector is unlikely to get a permanent blank check. Instead, the let’s-make-a-deal era that Donald Trump promises to usher into Washington could end up asking companies to cover the costs of separate tax reform efforts in exchange for lighter regulation and more offshore drilling.</div>

It’s merely the latest example that few things in the Age of Trump follows precedent, nothing is sacrosanct and special interest groups are mobilizing its allies to defend their interests. After all, Trump champions unpredictability as a negotiating tactic.</div>

“We have an opportunity to change the national conversation when it comes to energy policy,” Gerard said at his group’s State of American Energy address. “We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to find solutions for one of today’s most pressing issues.”</div>

At the same time, Gerard hinted that the broad tax overhaul being written in Congress—with hefty White House-in-waiting input to come—could treat the energy sector differently than other industries. That, he said, was unacceptable. “We’d hope that any changes will make America more globally competitive (and) are even applied and mindful of the important role the oil and natural gas industry plays in job creation and economic growth,” Gerard said.</div>

It was a sign that, despite Trump’s embrace of energy executives in his inner circle, the oil and gas industry cannot expect to get a total pass from Washington’s new regime. If anything, the cozy relationship between Trump and the oil fields could make it prime for P.R.-minded retribution to show just how they’re not best pals.</div>

Big Oil is taking for nothing for granted and is boosting its own blitz of good stats to defends its profits and workers. At his annual event, Gerard reminded guests that almost 10 million American jobs are supported through the energy sector and roughly $70 million a day in federal taxes are paid every day. All together, the energy sector makes up about 8% of the country’s economy. Its size and reach give it tremendous power to shape U.S. public policy.</div>

His promises during the campaign made voters feel good about their candidate, but achieving these goals may be far more difficult than Trump let on—or realized.</div>

Billionaire fracker Harold Hamm has been a top Trump adviser and has been one of the strongest voices goading the President-elect to scrap policies that constrain oil and gas companies. Trump tapped <a href="http://fortune.com/fortune500/exxon-mobil-2/" style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(24, 12, 12, 0.247059); box-sizing: border-box; color: #0c97d2; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Exxon Mobil</a> CEO Rex Tillerson (who once chaired the American Petroleum Institute) as his Secretary of State, Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt to lead the Environmental Protection Agency that he has repeatedly sued to block regulations, and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry to lead an Energy Department he once vowed to dismantle. It’s hardly the green team that Obama assembled with a Nobel Prize-winning scientist atop the list.</div>

When he met with reporters after his speech, Gerard faced questions about the friendly tone between his group’s members and the Administration-in-Waiting. “These are world-class Americans, if you will, of vast experiences,” Gerard said. “We should all take a deep breath and collaborate.”</div>

On Capitol Hill, members are privately telling reps of all industries that there will be compromises. Congressional aides are hearing in response the political equivalent of “not in my backyard.”</div>

One energy industry source tells TIME that his company worries that Republicans will give energy firms their wish list early on. Later, Congress would levy higher taxes on the boosted energy revenue to pay for proposed tax reforms that are likely an early bipartisan priority for the new Congress.</div>

Even so, new technologies that have emerged on Obama’s watch have made drilling easier and more profitable. When Obama came to power, the United States was producing 5.3 million barrels of oil at home, while that number rose to 9.4 million barrels a day by 2015. The result is, in part, cheaper energy costs that save the average family more than $1,300 each year, according to a National Association of Manufacturers study.</div>

Swiss researchers have done the math, and found that a 3.6 square centimeter solar cell is all that is needed to generate enough power during winter and summer to power a typical pacemaker. The study is the first to provide real-life data about the potential of using solar cells to power devices such as pacemakers and deep brain stimulators. According to lead author Lukas Bereuter of Bern University Hospital and the University of Bern in Switzerland, wearing power-generating solar cells under the skin will one day save patients the discomfort of having to continuously undergo procedures to change the batteries of such life-saving devices. The findings are set out in Springer's journal Annals of Biomedical Engineering.<br /><br /><br />Most electronic implants are currently battery powered, and their size is governed by the battery volume required for an extended lifespan. When the power in such batteries runs out, these must either be recharged or changed. In most cases this means that patients have to undergo implant replacement procedures, which is not only costly and stressful but also holds the risk of medical complications. Having to use primary batteries also influences the size of a device.<br /><br />Various research groups have recently put forward prototypes of small electronic solar cells that can be carried under the skin and can be used to recharge medical devices. The solar cells convert the light from the sun that penetrates the skin surface into energy.<br /><br />To investigate the real-life feasibility of such rechargeable energy generators, Bereuter and his colleagues developed specially designed solar measurement devices that can measure the output power being generated. The cells were only 3.6 square centimeters in size, making them small enough to be implanted if needed. For the test, each of the ten devices was covered by optical filters to simulate how properties of the skin would influence how well the sun penetrates the skin. These were worn on the arm of 32 volunteers in Switzerland for one week during summer, autumn and winter.<br /><br />No matter what season, the tiny cells were always found to generate much more than the 5 to 10 microwatts of power that a typical cardiac pacemaker uses. The participant with the lowest power output still obtained 12 microwatts on average.<br /><br />"The overall mean power obtained is enough to completely power for example a pacemaker or at least extend the lifespan of any other active implant," notes Bereuter. "By using energy-harvesting devices such as solar cells to power an implant, device replacements may be avoided and the device size may be reduced dramatically."<br /><br />Bereuter believes that the results of this study can be scaled up and applied to any other mobile, solar powered application on humans. Aspects such as the catchment area of a solar cell, its efficiency and the thickness of a patient's skin must be considered.</span>

Our booth was at the entrance to the Patient Advocate Pavilion, which enabled us to speak with many fellow attendees. One thing we noticed nearly universally among our visitors was that heads nodded in agreement whenever we spoke about the costs of cancer and the challenges of being a young adult survivor. This year, we were gratified to see leading oncologists and academics focusing on what we’ve been trying to express for a decade:</span><span style="background-color: transparent; font-size: 16.002px; line-height: 20.8026px;"> </span><b style="background: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 16.002px; line-height: 20.8026px; margin: 0px auto; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">cancer care can be very expensive, and young adults often get the short end of the stick.</b></div>

According to the American Cancer Society, people who experience financial burdens from their cancer treatment often had a lower health-related quality of life, were more likely to be depressed, and worried more about their cancer coming back. This is certainly nothing new. A study published in 2014 came to a similar conclusion: patients with large financial burdens often have a low quality of life. </div>

Last year, we wrote a <a href="http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/cam4.657" style="background: transparent; color: #00447c; font-size: 16.002px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; transition: color 0.3s ease-in-out; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">paper</a> citing data collected by The Samfund from 2007–2013. Our report highlights the challenges faced by young adults who have experienced severe financial toxicity<span style="background: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 16.002px; line-height: 0; margin: 0px auto; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"></span>and other economic effects because of their cancer diagnosis and treatment. The young adults in our study told us story after story about how the financial burden of cancer has impacted their stress levels and mental health. One participant wrote:</div>

We know anecdotally that financial burden leads people to delay medical care, skip follow-ups, and stop taking medications. And this is especially true for young adults because of their age, lack of employment history, low savings, and/or limited support from parents. One of our grant recipients wrote:</div>

At the ASCO Annual Meeting, we spoke with Yousuf Zafar, MD, Duke University Medical Center. In his 2015 <a href="http://www.ajmc.com/journals/issue/2015/2015-vol21-n9/the-utility-of-cost-discussions-between-patients-with-cancer-and-oncologists/" style="background: transparent; color: #00447c; font-size: 16.002px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; transition: color 0.3s ease-in-out; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">study</a>, he found that only 19% of patients across all ages reported having discussed the cost of cancer treatment with their physician. Don’t avoid starting the conversation about costs. It may help reduce or manage these costs down the line.</div>

Ask about the cost of drugs and whether there are options that are less expensive but equally effective. Find out if it costs the same to receive a drug in the clinic versus at home. Talk to your insurance company so you can fully understand your coverage.  Ask as many questions as you need to be comfortable.</div>

You can find a lot of information online and/or by asking your social worker, patient advocate, or fellow cancer survivors for advice. </div>

For example, if a parasite lives in your intestinal tract, eggs or cysts may be seen in a stool sample under a microscope," says Nazario. "But occasionally a tissue biopsy is required of the lung, skin, or intestine." </div>

While most parasites can be treated with medication, prevention is always the best medicine. "Wash your hands with soap and water after using the toilet, changing a diaper, caring for someone that's sick, before eating, after picking up animal waste, and obviously when preparing food," says Nazario. "Avoid drinking from lakes and streams and swallowing water in swimming pools or water parks." And travelers to areas that have parasites in food and water should boil, cook, or peel anything they ingest. </div>
